Our Tutors

Since 1988 London Master Classes has been privileged to present some of the world's most distinguished performers as master teachers offering intensive classical music masterclasses.

The legendary soprano, Sena Jurinac, was the first artist to be invited to teach in 1988, when the Course started as a weekend for singers. This course was held at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith. It continued as a weekend for singers until 1994 during which time Sena Jurinac, Sherrill Milnes, Ileana Cotrubas and Guiseppe Di Stefano were presented as master teachers. During these years the venues included the Riverside Studios, the Commonwealth Institute, Covent Garden and The South Bank. The courses were held in association with the Friends of Covent Garden and included a celebrity interview conducted by Richard Baker, Christopher Lee and Bernard Levin.

In 1994 the Course expanded to attract instrumentalists as well and that year a Spring Master Course was offered for voice, violin cello and piano. The Cello Class was led by Ralph Kirshbaum and the Piano Class by Norma Fisher. Both have continued to lead these classes. The Violin Class has presented Gyorgy Pauk, Grigori Zhislin and Sylvia Rosenberg as teachers. The success of the Course meant that two courses were held each year until 1996 when a Summer Master Course was established. A course during the summer months has continued until the present. The introduction of the Conducting Class took place in 1999 when Benjamin Zander was invited to teach. The reputation of this class has been acclaimed worldwide and it has now become a permanent feature of the Summer Master Course.

The Course is usually held at the Royal Academy of Music but, has also taken place at the Royal College of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the South Bank Centre and been "on tour" at the Royal Northern College of Music, where our 2018 Course will again be held.
