Sena Jurinac

Sena Jurinac was one of the outstanding sopranos of her time. Few singers have inspired such affectionate devotion in their admirers. Born in Croatia, she made her debut, at the age of twenty one, as Mimi in “La Boheme” with the Zagreb Opera and as a result was engaged by the Vienna State Opera to sing Cherubino in The Marriage of Figaro.

This was the start of a relationship that lasted forty years and for which she received an Honorary membership of the Company, giving her the title of Kammersangerin and the Mozart Medal. Her famous assumption of Strauss’s Octavian is preserved in the Paul Czinner film of “Der Rosenkavalier”. Her singing at all the worlds’ leading opera houses with the most distinguished conductors, frequent appearances as a concert and lieder singer and many recordings have left an indelible memory of her artistry.

In recent years she has been in great demand as a teacher and gives regular masterclasses in Vienna, Salzburg and in London for London Master Classes. She is also invited on the Jury of many international singing competitions.
