Philip Langridge

1939 - 2010

Philip Langridge's musical and dramatic qualities ensured that he was in constant demand throughout Europe, the USA, and Japan as one of the world's most distinguished singers. He was particularly closely associated with the Salzburg Festival, the Met, La Scala Milan, Bayerische Staatsoper, Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne, Edinburgh Festival and English National Opera.

He appeared in concert with leading conductors such as Abbado, Barenboim, Bychkov, Davis, Gergiev, Haitink, Harnoncourt, Levine, Mackerras, Mehta, Ozawa, Previn, Rattle and Solti.

His remarkable discography gained him two Grammy Awards, The Gramophone Award, Classic CD Award, and Classical Music Award. His last engagements included Das Rheingold and Moses and Aron at the Met, a new Ring Cycle and Nozze di Figaro at the ROH, Boris Godunov in Barcelona, Death in Venice in Sydney and Idomeneo in Salzburg.

He gave acclaimed masterclasses in Salzburg, Paris, Munich, New York, London (where he was Visiting Professor at the RCM and also Tutor for London Master Classes) Glasgow and Aldeburgh. He was made a CBE in 1994. He died in March 2010.
